Wonderful Waterford

Wednesday was the first day of classes for the Irish Life Experience. Students woke up around 8 AM feeling refreshed and rejuvenated-anxious to start learning about Irish history and culture. After breakfast, they delved into Irish literature with Angie. Angie shared the history of Irish literature with them and read a story by Frank O'Connor. Tom said it was very interesting. In Irish history, Dan talked about the Celts and Newgrange. Taryn taught the students about the geography and geology of Ireland in Irish studies. She spiced up the class with a few jokes, which the students did not find quite as amusing;). Joke: How do you know an Irishman is having a good time? Answer: He's Dublin over with laughter. In Irish American history with Dan, students shared their Irish roots and how their families came to America. Thomas Meagher was the main focal point, as he was originally from Waterford and served as the Montana Governor after the Civil War. Kelly was especially interested in him, since she has been able to trace her roots directly to him. Students had a quick lunch and then had their first opportunity to explore and wander around Waterford. It was a pity, because it was the first time since we had been in Ireland that it was lashing down rain. Being a fifteen minute walk into the city center, many students got drenched-even with a raincoat and an umbrella. That didn't stop them though. Some of them found internet cafes, while others picked up cell phones. A few became familiar with where the banks and post office were located. Some girls even discovered the amazing discount store, Penney's. Ryan said you couldn't go wrong with spending a day in Waterford. Sallie echoed his enthusiasm. In the evening, students participated in drama and dance. In drama they began working on limericks for the week of famous historical figures in Ireland. The limericks will be judged and the winner will receive a prize. In dance, the amazing Edel demonstrated the basics of 3's and 7's. The students learned the steps very quickly with the help of Kelly and Raizel. We were also lucky enough to have them show us their talent. At the end of of the evening, a group decided to play a game of soccer. Alyssa said the impromptu game was a lot of fun. Dan was also very impressed with Sasha. He said she was a rock in the fence and had some great plays. All in all, it was a fantastic day.
