Waterford Scavenger Hunt

Last night, the Irish Life Experience students participated in Edel's exciting Waterford Scavenger Hunt. Students were divided into teams of six. They were told that their first challenge would be to come up with a name and a cheer. Alyssa, Connor, Jenny, Raizel, Ryan, and Tom named their team the ILE-Intense Little Explorers and did a cheer to the theme song of Dora the Explorer. It was hilarious. The ILE Babies, made up of Catherine, Evan, Fi, Kelly, Sallie, and Scout/Scoot did a superb cheer. Sallie was their secret weapon, since she is a cheerleader and taught them her moves. Kels, MC, Molly, Olivia, Sasha and Zoe named themselves the Rockacons and definitely rocked the challenge. I'll try to upload some of the student's cheers to our ILE Fan Page on Facebook. They were then given two and a half hours to find and take pictures of certain items on a specific list around Waterford. A few items they had to find were: A bag of Tayto crisps (Bonus points for a full bag, since Edel, Levi, and Taryn were hungry), a bank deposit slip, the best price for fish and chips in town, a business card, a banana peel, a family recipe from a local resident, a phone number for guitar lessons, a sachet of salt, and a take out menu... They were even told they had to find a leprechaun. Teams definitely got creative, when Evan and Molly dressed up as leprechauns. It was hilarious! Some of the things they had to take a picture of were: A person from the US (Not on the ILE), a sheep, a team member with the Gardai, a team member pumping a stranger's gas, a team member with his or her doppelganger, the team hugging a lamppost, the team sharing one soda and everyone having their own straw, and the "green man" on the traffic lights. When students returned, Edel added up the points for each team. Some got a few bonus points when they tried to bribe the judges with chocolate. In the end, it was a very close score. However, the ILE Babies pulled it off and won. Congratulations Evan, Fi, Kelly, Sallie, and Scoot. They will be receiving a wonderful prize. Everyone did a great job and it was amazing how much they came together in their groups to accomplish each task. They had a lot of fun. We ended the day with the movie, In the Name of the Father. Based on a true story with actor Daniel Day-Lewis-it's about a small time thief from Belfast, Gerry Conlon. Conlon is falsely implicated in the IRA bombing of a pub that kills several people while he is in London. Bullied by the British police, he and four of his friends are coerced into confessing their guilt. Gerry's father and other relatives in London are also implicated in the crime. He spends fifteen years in prison with his father trying to prove his innocence with the help of a British attorney, Gareth Peirce. Many students said it was a great film, but thought it was depressing. They are looking forward to a more uplifting movie for the 4th of July.
