Kilmainham and Dublin

"Beware of the Risen People that have Harried and Held, Ye that have Bullied and Bribed." This is the quote the Irish Life Experience students saw today inscribed over a door in Kilmainham Gaol by a prisoner during the Irish Civil War. It quotes a speech by the iconic Irish nationalist Padraig Pearse who was executed on May 3, 1916 for his part in the Easter Rising. Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison, which is now a museum. Kilmainham Gaol has played an important part in Irish history, as many leaders of Irish rebellions were imprisoned and some executed in the jail. The jail has also been used as a set for several films, including In The Name Of The Father. Over the 140 years it served as a prison, its cells held many of the most famous people involved in the campaign for Irish independence. The leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held and executed here. "It was very eerie being in the prison," said Caitlin. Piper thought it was an excellent historical tour, but very depressing. "I enjoyed seeing the prison after watching Michael Collins," said Clara. After the incredible tour of Kilmainham's grim past, the ILE'ers had free time to wander the streets of Dublin. They brought a packed lunch and some enjoyed the sunshine in Trinity square, before getting down to business to explore and shop. Many arrived back to the bus with county jerseys, Ireland sweatshirts, Guinness souvenirs, and presents for family and friends. Caitlin bought a Kilkenny jersey from where her family is from, while Maureen bought a Kerry jersey. Caitlyn splurged and bought an Ireland football jersey, and said she can't wait to wear it on St. Patrick's Day. Caroll's, Elvery's, Penney's and Trinity Sweater purchases filled the bus back to King's Hospital. What a great day we had in Dublin. The night entailed a football game with the Italian and Spanish students at King's Hospital and the famous Irish Life Experience Talent Show. We have incredibly talented ILE'ers this year-more to come on that later! They simply continue to amaze me. It's past my bedtime, but will be back soon. Good night from Eire!
