85 Degrees and Beautiful Weather!

Just kidding...:) Wouldn't you know..., Ireland had gorgeous weather last month, but since we arrived, we have had quite a few rain showers. Luckily, all of the students have good rain jackets that keep them dry and have been wonderful sports about it. It hasn't stopped us from having a great time. "It's always raining," Sophia said. Today in Irish Studies they learned about the different counties and provinces in Ireland, along with some fun facts about Ireland. Taryn agreed to give a prize to the student who could pronounce the longest city name in Ireland, which is Muckanaghederdauhaulia in Co. Galway. Jordan was the winner. In Gaelic, they learned a few basics. Hello-Dia dhuit. How are you?-Conás átá tú? What is your name?-Cad is ainm duit? Where are you from?-Cad as tú? Hopefully by the time we get to the Gaeltacht on Inishmor, they will be able to have a simple conversation with some of the locals. Eileen said, "I really love Gaelic and hope to be able to study it more when I return home." Their Irish history teacher, Dan, also taught them about the Normans and Vikings and the first time the British came to Ireland. In Irish American history, they learned about the Ulster Scots and in literature, they were introduced to works from Patrick Cavanagh. In drama, they continued working on their limericks of their assigned literary figures and in dance, once again, Irish Dance Teacher, Kendall was extremely impressed, as the students learned the Walls of Limerick! "It's entertaining to watch everyone learn the steps in dance class," Elysse said. Tonight, Counselor Kendall organized a scavenger hunt for the students in Waterford. Some teams did very well and found almost everything. Some of the things on the list were to find the cheapest fish and chips in town, to have someone serenade them on the streets of Waterford, and to find a recipe from a local resident. The winners will be announced tomorrow and will receive a prize for their efforts. We are off to the Rock of Cashel tomorrow and to Kilkenny Castle. They will have some time to explore the wonderful city of Kilkenny which I'm sure the students will enjoy as well.
